Summer 2026 Grant Deadlines: Don't Miss These Programs

Summer is when many organizations slow down their grant activity — and that is exactly why it is the best time to get ahead. While other applicants are on vacation, the organizations that submit strong summer applications face less competition and get reviewed by program officers who have more time to give each application careful attention.

Here are the key grant deadlines and opportunities for summer 2026 that Canadian nonprofits, sport organizations, and Indigenous communities should have on their radar.

Federal Programs

New Horizons for Seniors Program

The community-based stream of New Horizons typically opens for applications in late spring or early summer with a summer deadline. Grants up to $25,000 support projects that engage seniors, combat social isolation, and promote volunteerism. If your organization runs programs that involve or benefit seniors, this is one of the most accessible federal programs available.

Canada Summer Jobs

While the 2026 application deadline for Canada Summer Jobs has passed, now is the time to plan your 2027 application. Applications typically open in December/January for the following summer. If you missed the 2026 cycle, use this summer to identify the positions you want to fund, develop job descriptions, and gather the organizational data you will need for the application.

Sport Canada — Community Sport for All Initiative

The Community Sport for All Initiative has multiple intake periods throughout the year. The summer intake typically falls in June or July. This program funds community sport programming that removes barriers to participation — financial, cultural, geographic, or disability-related. Grants can reach $100,000 or more for national-scope projects.

Canadian Heritage — Multiculturalism Programs

Canadian Heritage's multiculturalism grants support projects that promote intercultural understanding, civic participation, and inclusive communities. The program typically has a summer application window. If your organization delivers programming that serves newcomer, multicultural, or diverse communities, explore this program.

Provincial Programs (Alberta)

Community Initiatives Program (CIP)

CIP accepts applications on a continuous intake basis, but summer is an ideal time to submit because fall applications face heavier competition as organizations return from summer break. If you have a project or operational funding need, submitting your CIP application in June or July can result in faster processing and funding decisions before fall.

Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP)

CFEP also operates on continuous intake and funds facility improvements up to $125,000. Summer is construction season, and many facility projects need funding decisions before fall. If you have a facility project planned for 2026-2027, submit your CFEP application early in the summer to give the program time to process it.

Alberta Foundation for the Arts

AFA has multiple grant deadlines throughout the year for different programs. The project grant deadline for fall/winter programming typically falls in the summer months. Check the AFA website for specific dates, which are published well in advance.

Alberta Sport Connection

Alberta Sport Connection's organizational support grants have deadlines that vary by program component. Summer is typically when applications for the following fiscal year's funding are prepared. Contact ASC for current deadline information.

Community Foundations

Calgary Foundation

The Calgary Foundation accepts community grant applications through regular intake cycles. Summer intake periods are typically available — check the Calgary Foundation's granting calendar for specific dates. Neighborhood grants and smaller community grants may have more flexible timelines.

Edmonton Community Foundation

ECF has multiple granting programs with different deadlines. Their community grants typically have a summer intake window. Review their website for current application periods and eligibility requirements.

Regional Community Foundations

Smaller community foundations across Alberta — Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and others — often have spring/summer application deadlines for fall granting. Contact your local community foundation directly for their specific timeline.

Corporate and Private Foundations

TD Friends of the Environment Foundation

TD FEF accepts applications on a rolling basis through local advisory boards. There is no single national deadline — each regional board has its own meeting schedule. Summer applications are reviewed at fall board meetings. If you have an environmental project, apply early in the summer for the best chance of fall funding.

TELUS Community Investment

TELUS Community Boards meet quarterly to review applications. Summer submission deadlines vary by board but are typically in June or July for September review. Check the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation website for your regional board's specific timeline.

RBC Foundation

RBC Foundation grants support a range of community initiatives with a focus on youth, water, and community resilience. Application windows vary by program. Review the RBC Foundation website in May/June for current opportunities.

How to Prepare Now

The best time to prepare a grant application is weeks before the deadline, not days. Use the coming weeks to gather documents, build budgets, and draft narratives — so when deadlines arrive, you are ready.

Here is a summer preparation checklist:

  1. Update your organizational documents — Board list, most recent financial statements, proof of registration, annual report
  2. Refresh your project descriptions — Review and update your program descriptions, participant numbers, and outcome data
  3. Prepare a standard budget template — A well-formatted budget that can be adapted for different applications saves hours of work
  4. Collect letters of support — Reach out to partners, community leaders, and stakeholders now so letters are ready when you need them
  5. Set up deadline alerts — Add every relevant deadline to your calendar with reminders at two weeks and one week before
  6. Schedule writing time — Block dedicated time for grant writing in your summer calendar. Treat it like a meeting that cannot be moved.

Programs With Rolling or Continuous Intake

Several programs do not have fixed deadlines and accept applications year-round. These are often the least competitive because most organizations only apply when they see a specific deadline. Submitting during the summer — when volumes are lower — can result in faster processing:
